What is Fresno GROWS Best Babies Zone?

West Fresno successfully competed to become one of only a handful of communities around the country to be named a CityMatch Best Babies Zone (BBZ). We see the zone as a vital platform for change to improve birth outcomes for the African American community to galvanize our community in new and exciting ways in order to support optimal health and well-being.

Four US Census tracts in our Best Babies Zone areaThe Fresno Grows BBZ initiative aims to address health disparities in the African American community, specifically preterm births (born before 37 weeks) and infant mortality in west Fresno (93706 zip code). Research points to racism as a root cause of African American children being born too soon or not reaching their first birthdays.

Our approach is to address structural racism through civic engagement, community organizing, and collaborating with community members to improve economic opportunities, access to healthy environments, and culturally affirming health care to support African American women and families across the reproductive life courses.
